An arrest has been made for an alleged homicide in Winchester. 26-year-old Keegan Duhaime, of Winchester, has been arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 72-year-old Timothy Hill. Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers from the Winchester Police Department responded to 484 Scofield Mountain Road in Winchester for a welfare check. Officers on scene discovered a deceased adult male in the residence who has been identified as Hill. Duhaime is the grandson of Hill’s wife, and resided at 484 Scofield Mountain Road with him. Arraignment will be conducted today at the Cheshire County Superior Court in Keene at a time to be scheduled by the Court.
The Vermont Health Department says Covid 19 cases, new hospital admissions and the overall percentage of hospital beds used by covid patients has decreased. According to the latest state report, there were 457 new covid cases reported last week. There were 33 new hospital admissions, and covid patients made up only one point seven percent of the beds in Vermont hospitals.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders says a shortage of microchips has led to a shortage of manufacturing jobs. Sanders is backing efforts to expand U.S. microchip production but is against corporate bailouts for the industry. In a Senate floor speech, the independent said the question we should be asking is this: Should American taxpayers provide the micro-chip industry with a blank check of over $50 billion at a time when semiconductor companies are making tens of billions of dollars in profits and paying their executives exorbitant compensation packages? I think the answer to that question should be a resounding NO.
A small ski area in Vermont announced Wednesday that it has changed its name from Suicide Six to Saskadena Six amid an increased awareness about mental health and concerns about the insensitive nature of the original name. “Saskadena” means “standing mountain” in the Abenaki language, the ski area in South Pomfret, near Woodstock, said on its website. The Ski area, in a statement said the name sends a powerful message of connection both to the deeper history of the mountain with the Abenaki nation and to the present-day community at large.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has launched a series of television and digital ads to address the shortage of childcare workers across the state. The goal of the campaign is to actively recruit applicants to work in a variety of childcare positions in a range of childcare facilities throughout New Hampshire. DHHS Associate Commissioner Christine Santaniello. “From home-based childcare to larger centers, families need quality, fully-staffed child care providers that can meet New Hampshire’s demand. A strong and stable childcare workforce gives children an opportunity to experience the benefits of an early learning environment and allows families to remain focused on their economic stability and well-being.”
The newly established Vermont State University unifying three state schools has received accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education, the Vermont State College System announced Tuesday. Vermont State University will be comprised of Castleton University, Northern Vermont University and Vermont Technical College and will welcome its first class in the fall of 2023. Consolidation talks started in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, as increasing costs and declining student enrollment exacerbated the college system’s financial challenges. Vermont State University will launch next July and open applications for its inaugural class in the coming months.
