This remote tech company’s workforce met for the first time in two years — in Spain

When Adele Kennedy finds herself trading Slack messages with a remote coworker about how best to tackle the latest work headache, sometimes it helps to reminisce about the time they spent three weeks together in Spain.

That’s where her employer, expense software company Expensify, transported almost the entire company, and some of their kids and partners, to earlier this year, for a working vacation to hash out tough challenges at sidewalk cafes and beach-side working sessions — followed by plenty of group dinners, drinks and dancing.

This past August and September, most of the company’s roughly 150 employees and some guests spent a week in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Spain’s Galicia region; a week in the beach-side town of Cádiz; and finished with a final blowout in Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa.

The company covers airfare for employees and a guest as well as group dinners and outings. Employees cover their own lodging for the first couple of weeks, but the company pays for a luxury resort when most plus-ones show up for the third week, along with meals, child care and just about everything else.
