Brooklyn is all about family — and children always come first. For our young students – and their working parents — nothing matters more than high-quality, affordable childcare. Study after study shows that early learning in the first months and years of life sets the groundwork for all future learning and development. Unfortunately, that level of childcare can be both difficult to find and virtually impossible to afford for many.
What most people may not know is that The Salvation Army has two state-of-the art childcare centers in Brooklyn with more than 100 openings available now. The centers are located on Bushwick Avenue in Bushwick and on Riverdale Avenue in Brownsville. At each center, certified and highly qualified, caring staff provide children a safe and stimulating environment while parents go to work. For many families, providing nutritious meals, warm clothing, and other life essentials can also be a challenge, and the centers pay close attention to each child’s need to help fill them.
“The Salvation Army offers a wide range of services to the community – and free or affordable childcare services is at the top of the list, given the number of vulnerable children throughout New York City,” said Mary Nam, director of child care at The Salvation Army. “Providing this service can be a lifeline to the families we serve, and we care for their children as if they were our own.”
According to Nam, there are thousands of infants and toddlers throughout the city who do not receive high-quality or safe care while their parents or guardians are at work. Or, too often, they can’t go to work because they don’t have – or can’t afford – quality care.
