Pamplin Media Group – Clackamas County Childcare for All Task Force hits 6-month mark

Group started in October 2021 will a mission of increasing the amount of childcare slots in Clackamas County

The Clackamas County Childcare for All Task Force has hit its six month mark following its creation in October of 2021. The organization works to reconcile the lack of childcare options available to families in Clackamas county. The group was started from a partnership between the Clackamas Education Service District and Clackamas county staff. According to the organization’s website, they plan to “be on a path to universally accessible child care” in two years.

The creation of the task force came after a series of reports in Clackamas county cities of a severe lack of childcare slots. In 2019, the city of Sandy was labeled as a “childcare desert” due to its lack of childcare options. In 2020 Sandy city officials met to discuss how to increase childcare options in the city, however, the city is still working to bridge the gap in care.

This year, according to the Clackamas County’s Childcare for All website, less than 15% of children under the age of two have access to a childcare slot. Taking care of young children can prevent family or caregivers from returning to work, and the website cites this information as contributing to workplace shortages following the pandemic.

In October of 2021, Clackamas county hosted a town hall focused on the lack of accessible child care. A 2019 study from Oregon State University stated 21% of Clackamas County children under 5 have a slot in a child care organization.

However, Childcare for All is working towards remedying this lack of care slots for young children. In the six months since their creation, they have contracted with Morant McLeod managing consultants to assist in the Task Force meetings.

In terms of finances, Childcare for All developed three sub-groups to tackle the cost of childcare and strategize the work for their team. The website lists the three subgroups as follows:

• Infrastructure and Expansion

• Policy and Program Development

• Workforce Development.

Within six months the Childcare for All Task Force has completed many of the goals they set out to by this time, and show no sign of slowing down. However, there is still a significant way to go until Clackamas County can maintain available child care slots for all young children.
