Founded by a mother in need of childcare, Otter connects families with other families in need of childcare.
Finding reliable childcare that parents can feel safe about has always been a difficult process.
That difficulty was magnified even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools and childcare centers closed across the country, while parents were either let go of their jobs or forced to perform their functions at home.
That was the case for Helen Mayer, CEO and founder of Otter Childcare, an online user-to-user platform that connects parents of children in need of childcare with stay-at-home or retired parents that are able and willing to provide a safe and nurturing environment to children.

“So we started out facilitating swaps between families during the pandemic where they could take turns watching each other’s kids,” Mayer said in a recent interview with the KHTS Morning Show. “And then it turned into a model where actually we matched parents who need childcare with another parent who can watch their kids.”

Users looking for or to provide childcare for families create a profile on the Otter website or mobile app to get started. After a background check is performed, users are connected with matches within their community. The platform then allows parents and childcare providers to manage their account, plan schedules, and make payments.
“A stay-at-home parent gets to make money watching someone else’s kids as well, and then a parent just gets really reliable childcare that feels like family,” Mayer said. “I feel so lucky to get to tackle a problem I’m passionate about with people I admire.”
