New Iowa bill could impact childcare centers

Lawmakers and state leaders have been talking all year about using child care to help solve the workforce crisis. A new House bill could be their first step in tackling that goal. The new bill would impact child care centers all across the state.House Study Bill 511 would change the ratio of staff to students, increasing the number of kids allowed per employee.It would allow one worker to be able to watch eight 2-year-olds instead of six. It would also allow one worker to watch 10 3-year-olds instead of eight. Republicans say this bill would help more toddlers get spots in child care centers.But Democrats stay they still have questions about the impact on classroom workers.House Minority leader, Representative Jennifer Konfrst, said, “we need to talk with the people who are providing the childcare and hear from them what the impact of these changes would be on an actual day-to-day work in the classroom, in these childcare centers.”The Iowa Department of Human Services also announced today that more funding will go to childcare providers. A $30,000,000 recruitment and retention bonus program will go towards helping Iowa’s child care providers attract and retain workers.
