CDC Releases New Coronavirus Guidance For Childcare Centers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its coronavirus guidelines for childcare centers. The updated guidance, which was last changed in July, emphasizes the importance of wearing masks, social distancing, and proper hygiene. The agency said the new information is meant to help protect children, families, and staff at “child care programs, including child care centers, family child care homes, Head Start programs, and other pre-kindergarten programs.”

“This guidance outlines strategies that child care programs can use to maintain healthy environments and operations, lower the risk of COVID-19 spread in their programs, prepare for when someone is sick with COVID-19, and support coping and resilience,” the CDC wrote.

The CDC said that children should be kept “with the same peers and staff to reduce the risk of spread throughout the program.” The agency added that facilities should do their best to increase ventilation by opening windows and doors and provided more information about best practices for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and toys that are shared among children.

“Throughout the pandemic, parents and caregivers have faced the challenging task of balancing child care responsibilities with work responsibilities often operating in a virtual environment with limited child care options,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC director, said in a White House COVID-19 briefing. “We know that child care programs and early child education are essential to healthy childhood development. The services these programs offer are important for working parents and provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for kids to get them ready for school and develop critical social and emotional skills.”
