Bartos Child and Family Center earns national accreditation | Community News

[Shippensburg, PA] – The Bartos Child and Family Center located on the campus of Shippensburg University and managed by the Shippensburg University Foundation, has again earned full accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)—the world’s largest organization working on behalf of young children. The Center earned its first accreditation in 2006 and has had the distinct honor of maintaining accreditation ever since.

“We are very fortunate to have a very committed and well-educated staff in childcare development, under the leadership of Stephanie McCullough.  They receive high praise from the families who have entrusted their children at Bartos,” said Dr. Leslie Clinton, President & CEO of the Shippensburg University Foundation.

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the Bartos Child and Family Center went through an extensive self-study and quality-improvement process, followed by an on-site visit by NAEYC Assessors to verify and ensure that the program met each of the ten program standards, and hundreds of corresponding individual criteria. NAEYC-accredited programs are always prepared for unannounced quality-assurance visits during their accreditation term, which lasts for five years. NAEYC Accreditation is a rigorous and transformative quality-improvement system that uses a set of 10 research-based standards to collaborate with early education programs to recognize and drive quality improvement in high-quality early learning environments.

Dr. Nicole Hill, Interim Provost of Shippensburg University and current parent of a child enrolled at Bartos Child and Family Center, stated, “One need that we consistently hear from families is the need for high-quality childcare, and receiving accreditation by NAEYC evidences that the Bartos Child and Family Center provides exemplary care and education to our youngest community members. I am continually impressed with the dedication of the teachers and staff to the educational experience and development of the young children they serve. Reaccreditation provides our community and families with the confirmation that Bartos Child and Family Center is leading the region in quality early childhood education and joins a group of national exemplars of the highest standards in early childhood education. Shippensburg University and the Shippensburg and surrounding communities are positively impacted by the ongoing excellence of the teachers and staff at the Center.”

In the 30 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. More than 6,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC—less than 10 percent of all child care centers, preschools, and kindergartens nationally achieve this recognition. “NAEYC-Accredited programs have committed to a process that takes time, energy and dedication to complete” states Alissa Mwenelupembe, Senior Director Early Learning Program Accreditation. “The Bartos Child and Family Center has demonstrated their commitment to young children and their families.”

The Bartos Child and Family Center offers child care for children ages 1 through 5 and before and after school care for kindergarten through fifth graders. If you are interested in enrolling your child/children in either program, visit and fill out the enrollment interest form.
