Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. They came together to discuss cross-border culture, collaboration and pressing issues at the third U.S.-Mexico Mayors’ Summit. “In San Diego, we have 21 sister cities in 20 different countries and two of those are with Mexico,” said Dr. Michael McQuary of Sister Cities International. Leaders know that what happens on one side of the border affects the other side of the border as well. According to Mayor Todd Gloria, funds have been assembled to clean the Tijuana River Valley, which has been polluting our beaches along the San Diego coastline. In addition, he toured the new border crossing in Otay Mesa which will affect both sides. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  2. As many San Diegans know, wait times at the U.S-Mexico border can be several hours long. Now, there is some positive news. According to SANDAG, a proposed plan to extend the blue line trolly into Tijuana is now under consideration. Officials expect wait times to be much shorter, perhaps 10 – 15 minutes. The plan is one of three possibilities being considered to help improve transportation in San Diego County. (ABC 10 News San Diego)
  3. Parents in San Diego are struggling to pay the high cost of child care. Representative Nathan Fletcher said, “We have taken several actions at the county to help both parents and providers, but this Childcare Board Conference is the first step in a new comprehensive approach to childcare in San Diego County. I am excited the labor council and chamber are in our corner on this issue.” The annual cost of care for one infant in a licensed childcare center costs more than $19K a year. Yet, 25 percent of childcare workers in the state live in poverty. “Pay for most childcare workers is not even enough for them to afford to support their own children,” said Brigette Browning of the San Diego Labor Council. (NBC San Diego)
  4. Look, up in the sky! No, it’s not a bird or a plane, or Superman. It’s the 2022 Orionids and Taurids meteor shower, and it’s streaming a beautiful show across the San Diego skies. Meteors from Orion, Leo, and Taurus constellations are creating their show in the skies now through early November. Stargazers can expect to see up to 20 shooting stars an hour. Don’t miss it!
